I can’t believe how quick the year is flying past. The award for July’s student of the month goes to Riley Cole of the Infant class. When Riley had his first lesson, it was at the last grading. Not knowing what to expect he participated in the whole lesson regardless of how tough the evening was. Riley went home really sweaty but enjoyed it so much that he came back. Riley has had a fantastic start and continues to perform each week. Well-done Riley!
On Tuesday 5th July 2016, the Wymondham infant and junior students attempted their grading exam which is conducted within the lesson. The children turned up for class with myself been dressed in a different outfit other than the children see me on a regular basis. The novice grades are a little confused but for the senior grades they instantly know, its grading time – “GAME HEAD ON!”
With them all lined up at the side of the mat, water bottles to their sides, waiting to be bowed onto the mat. “Otogai ni rei,” was shouted instantly known to the children, bow on to the mat, turn around remove their footwear and come on to the mat. The highest grade is called to line the class up, this is their first test – can they line up smartly and quietly. Next is their training oath which is said in Japanese and then in English so they understand what is being said. Everything was going well so we move onto questions about items we wear, breakfall terminology and a few harder questions for the higher grades.
With everything going smoothly it was time to perform their basic breakfalls, lined up at the side of the mat in single file, first was their forward rolls, followed by left, right, front & back breakfalls and finishing with no handed forward rolls. Excellent, quick drink and then into a quick fitness test for all. Ten of each exercise: press-ups, sit-ups, leg raises & burpees was sufficient to get the blood moving. Time to move onto their throwing techniques they’ve been learning over the past few months. After completing the throw numerous times by each other a fitness exercise was thrown in. This was repeated in the next few techniques.
Time to test their fighting spirit, rounds of stand-up grappling was next, interspersed with static press-up holds of 60 seconds. Both the infant and Junior class were very determined to never give up, exactly what we want from the students. After another drink break we finished with their last test. The higher the belt the more burpees were required from the student. As we reached a belt colour you had the option to sit down if you wanted, most carried on and on and on. Fantastic effort by all, very much impressed. OSU
The following week we had class presentations and fun lesson, an enjoyable time for everyone. All that hard work will pay off. First was dodge ball, a great game – we had fifteen soft balls in play which meant that balls were flying in all direction and everyone had a good chance at being able to throw a ball. After we tried something different and had fun with giant boxing gloves. Lots and lots of laughter by all…
Next month will be summer holidays for all, if you are going away, have a lovely time, be safe and I will see you upon your return.
