June saw the teenagers and adults of Wymondham practicing and preparing themselves for their National Gradings.

On Saturday 25th June 2016 adult students from Wymondham travelled to headquarters in Norfolk to take their gradings. With the gradings to commence at 11:30 am, there was ample time to get to location, have a cup of tea or coffee before the day starts. I arrived in location to find a few nervous faces which is to be expected, especially for the students that were grading for the first time.

First was kit inspection, to ensure that everyone had the right equipment, dressed correctly, shoes polished, shaven and in good order. It was a very good turn out with only a few minor muck-ups which meant that they would have their fitness test increased by five every time they mucked up. Everyone was hoping you didn’t get picked up and if you did, only the once as to many increases in your basic fitness tests would seriously mess your day up.

With kit inspection completed, it was time for everyone to get tested on their general knowledge. Tables and chairs out, very much like you were back at school sitting your exams – for some of us, that was a long time ago. The test paper was multiple choice which was a lot easier than the first one I completed in Ishin Ryu but it gave a good indication who was studying and who wasn’t… There were a couple of curve balls in the test to get you thinking but other than that was straight forward.

Test done, time to get on the road for the Ishin Ryu bare footed run, lined up in three’s, very much like you were marching. Sensei Sam Gladdy taking the lead and calling out the timings. The run went fantastic, watching out for any road kill which might be underfoot. After the run it was back in the hall, wash your feet and then into the dojo and start the 2016 adult national gradings.

White belts went in first and gave a fabulous grading maybe because it was reminded to them all beforehand to be loud and confident. If you make a mistake, carry on and try not to make it so obvious. If you were seen, you would get told to repeat. There first grading is not to test how proficiently good you are with techniques as this could take a lifetime but to see your grit and determination when things get hard. Unfortunately, there was only one failure on white belt, better luck next time – fingers crossed you will smash it in December.

Whites going to yellows went fantastic with only a few students getting flustered but they soon got themselves together. Next we had yellow to orange, who had a stonking grading and was in and out in about thirty-five minutes, loud, aggressive, technically good and damn right determined to give everything they had. Last grading was orange to Green, Nick Rowan and Joshua Ciannarella retaking after unfortunately not getting it in December.

Lee Swain and Jake Rider trying to do green after just finishing orange. After a very fast pace Orange belt, things were not going to get any easier or slow down. With techniques, throws, knockdown submission, burpee races and a lot more thrown in the guys performed fantastic. It is my pleasure to congratulate the following students from Wymondham passing their belt:

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THOSE THAT PASSED THEIR ADULT GRADINGS.

Eden Ciannarella – White Belt
Joshua Ciannarella – Green Belt

On Sunday 12th June, we had the teenager gradings which pretty much run in line with what the adults perform apart from the written exam. Their presentation test is performed in their school uniform; verbal questions are asked and they still perform the bare footed run and have to work just as hard.

The gradings went fantastic and I was very proud of all my students. For a more thorough report, please read Sensei Sheila’s report on how the teenager gradings went.

On Sunday 22nd May 2016 Ishin Ryu staged the Children’s Championships. Sonny Clarke, Louis Ocal, Andrew Holmes, Daryl Dixon, Alex Nesbitt, and Rubie Keymer entered into the competition. We saw some fantastic fighting from all that participated in the day. Sonny Clarke and Rubie Keymer getting first place in their weight divisions. Well-done Sonny and Rubie, cracking fights. Louis Ocal got second place and Andrew Holmes coming third, well-done to the pair of you! Unfortunately, Daryl and Alex didn’t get into the top three but I think with the knowledge that they have gained this time will be a whole lot better if they wish to compete next year. Well-done to you all, very proud indeed!

Please visit our website www.ishinryu.com as much as possible as I submit reports every month about the students training during the previous month. This is a great opportunity to see if you have been mentioned or appear in a photo.

We also have the new calendar page where you can have a look at upcoming events so you can plan ahead. You can also leave feedback on each of the reports or comment on your son/daughters club and share them to your Facebook pages.

If you have any questions or you are unsure of anything, please catch me at the club where I will be happy to help!

If you are on Facebook, please can you send me and Kevin Pell a friend request so if we need to pass on information quickly I can contact you, and when the reports go up I can share it to your Facebook page so you get it straight away.
