Happy New Year to you all! We arrived at the Wymondham Leisure Centre to get set up for the first lesson back in the year. When I entered into the dojo, the first thing that caught my eye was the new partition curtain that the leisure centre has replaced. It was great to see a new curtain, which really helps with the children not getting distracted from other activities. The old curtain was in desperate need of changing so was a pleasure to have.

Young Oscar Robinson was the first student to come into the dojo with a big smile. Oscar was so excited to tell me about what him and his younger brother has received from Santa this year. Shortly after the remaining students arrived. We got everyone onto the mat to start the lesson, line-up and breakfalls were performed, then a little fitness to get the blood going.

We continued to practice the technique that we started last month, which was learning how to buck your partner off of you whilst they are straddling and pinning you down. A quick demonstration to see if they remembered then I got them to partner up and went around the mat and gave any help where needed. The next couple of weeks we continued with this to make sure they fully understood the technique.
I would like to welcome along to the club Oliver and Samuel Gower who joined us right at the end of January. The boys are settling in really well and enjoying the classes.
The last week of January we moved onto another technique, learning how to take our partners down by shooting for the legs. A few demonstrations then straight into practicing, they really enjoyed this technique and found it quite easy so I moved on and demonstrated the next phase, getting side control.

The Juniors practiced a defence from a punch to the head, moving off line, taking their back and performing a rear strangle. We practiced the beginning making sure we could get the footwork right before moving onto the rear strangle. We carried this forward to the next week before changing the ending of this technique, rather than finish off with a rear naked choke we would now take them down to the ground by kicking at the back of the knee and finish off with a stamp kick. Before commencing with this technique I explained about the importance of looking after your partner and not allowing their heads to hit the floor. During the lessons we also had multiple rounds of grappling combined with fitness.

Our Teenager Sonny Clarke seems to have had a growth spurt over Christmas and come back bigger and stronger, only thirteen years of age is properly close to six feet tall. With a lot growing still to be done he truly will be a giant. With the teenagers we practiced some orange belt syllabus techniques to get Sonny started. We also practiced some white belt, which hopefully Andrew Holmes will attempt in the summer.
It was great to see Michael Walden back on the mat after taking some time out because of injury that was caused outside of Ju Jitsu. Michael said that he was feeling a little rusty and unfit but was determined to come back. We went through some basic techniques with Michael and Joshua Ciannarella to see what he remembered. It was also great to see Linnet Bruce back training.

This month we celebrated the 25th Anniversary of Ishin Ryu Ju Jitsu by having a lovely meal, great entertainment and it being an all-round spectacular evening. Soke Kevin Pell placed on another great evening and gave us a lovely keepsake, which is truly a limited edition collection. I hope Joshua Ciannarella and Linnet Bruce enjoyed your first Anniversary dinner. It was great to see you enjoying yourselves with your partners.

The children’s gradings will not be far away so we look forward to getting them all ready and continuing with their training in February.

Next month we have the children’s spring half term, don’t worry the club is still open, so if you are not going away, come to training…
We also have The Children’s Championships coming in May so we need to get ready and see who will be the champion in their weight group…
