Congratulations to Archie Broomfield and Amouree Wellington receiving student of the month for January 2015, what a fantastic way to start the year off, well done guys!
The first lesson of the year I was pleased to see a few more Infant students having a trial lesson; two brothers, a young boy called Joel Williams and a young girl called Macie Cooper. Joel being only four is very active and loves to get involved. Joel and Macie have now enrolled with us and I would like to welcome them along to the club. Unfortunately the two young brothers now have to move to another town so are unable to start at the moment due to the time difficulties getting to classes.
I would also like to welcome along to the Junior class Nurel Wellington. Nurel now enjoys classes with his older brother.
We started the Infant lesson off as per normal, line-up, warm-up and then breakfalls. Young Matthew Blackaller loves to perform his forward rolls and regular asks me when we are doing rolls. We started off where we finished last month, learning an escape when you are pinned to the floor when your partner is straddling you. They remembered this well so I moved around the mat and was able for each student to practice on me so I could make sure they were performing the technique correctly.
During the first lesson I also added some fitness by doing relay races and incorporating different activities that will help them in the repetition of breakfalls.
The next few lessons we practiced turning your partner over by controlling their heads. They found this relatively easy so I moved onto a take down by attacking both legs and then gaining side control. They all worked really hard on this and grasped it well.
The Junior class started off the same way but rather than doing relay races I decided to do a pyramid system with press-ups; they would run to one end of the mat perform one press-up, run back to the start then return to the opposite end to perform two. This sequence would continue until they reached ten press-ups. Quite tiring but they really enjoyed.
The Juniors worked on a defence when someone is trying to throw a strike towards your face, moving off line and finishing with a rear naked choke. We worked on a few different stages of this technique to get it perfect. We practiced this technique for the next few weeks before moving onto the next; this time we worked on taking your partner to the ground by attacking the legs and then gaining side control. Another favourite thing the children love to do is grapple, most lessons a few of the students approach me and ask if they can grapple, so most lessons we finish off that way, which builds on confidence and develops new skills. I added a little bit of fun to the end of the lesson by getting them to sit back to back, interlock arms and see if they could stand up by working together. They found this quite exciting especially when they achieved the exercise.
The Teenagers performed the same fitness as the Junior class. I then demonstrated some techniques from other belts to give the students an insight to what would come in the future.
The next few weeks of the Teenager class we worked on some yellow belt syllabus techniques for Linden Turner and Courteney Shannon and white belt syllabus for our new students.
Linden has just got his first weapon and was keen to learn all the new techniques for his belt. Linden has been taking his training very serious and gives one hundred per cent to everything he does.
The Adults celebrated the 25th Anniversary when we all came together and enjoyed a meal with great entertainment. It was a fantastic evening and great to catch up with friends.
We have the children’s gradings fast approaching in March so we look forward to keep practicing our techniques in preparation for the gradings.
We have the spring half term in February and classes will remain open unless our very helpful caretaker has planned a trip away…
Look forward to seeing you all in February for another great month of training.
