The Bishops C. Of E. School Dojo, August 2014 Monthly Report by Sensei Del Shannon

Alfie Turner working hard with brother Linden Turner…

At the beginning of August, The Bishops C. of E. School Dojo was closed for the first two weeks due to the caretaker and myself being on holiday. With summertime here I had a good feeling that the classes could be a little quieter. As we closed for two weeks in August I arranged to make up those lessons on a Saturday of one week and Sunday of the following.

On the Saturday of our make-up lesson we had a few students from the Wymondham dojo travel to Thetford to do their catch-up lesson. It was great to see them and we warmly welcomed them.
I decided to have a little fun with their breakfalls, getting them to perform two giant steps and forward roll as normal; we practiced this a couple of times before adding a little extra. This time two giant steps, then perform a “Super Man Roll,” There was a big smile on their faces, as they wanted to practice over and over.
We moved onto our rear breakfalls but this time it would be a “Spiderman Back Breakfall,” they would perform two giant steps as before, jump up in the air like a star and land on their feet, then straight into a back breakfall. They were all having fun so I took it a little further… Everyone running around I would call “Superman,” or “Spiderman,” they would then have to perform whichever one I shouted! The girls wanted me to shout “Superwoman,” or “Spiderwoman,” which of course I obliged…

The Infants and Juniors also practiced a throw called “Body Drop,” over and over we practiced and of course made lots of games to aid in the repetition of the technique.
The Juniors were able to pick this up quite quickly so we had time to perform more techniques. They had a go at learning defences against a kick to the head. Taking it apart bit by bit, they learnt the block, the technique and the finish off.

The last Sunday of the month, which was our last Make-up lesson, we decided to work on a different throw. This time we had a go at “Knee Wheel,” I was amazed at how quickly they all picked this up but its very similar to another throw. As with all new throws I teach to children, I enjoy creating games to help in their learning…

With August finished its now time for all the children to start getting ready to return to school whether this one or their next…
