On 1st July 2015 the Bishops Ju Jitsu Club was pleased to open a brand-new adult class starting at 7:30pm and finishing at 9pm. I finished the infant and junior classes that day and had a 30 minute window in which I could sort out any admin and prepare myself for the new students that would be coming through the door. Nearer to that time adults starting to arrive, which of course I was only too pleased! We had three new adults that turned up: Paul Godfrey, Devlinn Turner, and Matthew Broomfield. We also had Gavin Margrie who has trained in a number Ishin Ryu Ju Jitsu clubs in the area.

It was great to see Gavin turn up again, and hopefully he will stay with us and have a long lasting martial arts career within Ishin Ryu. Paul Godfrey, who regularly turns up to watch his daughter (Lauren Godfrey) training with myself was very eager to find out that we would be starting new adult classes – as soon as I announced that there would be new glasses, Paul was very clear he wanted to do it! Devlinn Turner, who again regularly turns up to watch his brother (Linnden Turner) in the teenager class was also wishing to start and Matthew Broomfield watches his son (Archie Broomfield) train in the junior class.

A few years back Matthew did have a look at our style of Ju Jitsu but couldn’t commit due to other priorities within his family life, hopefully now Matthew will be able to continue with his training.

With already been very pleased with the adults that came through the door, I was overwhelmed with the arrival of the founder and chief instructor, Soke Kevin Pell, accompanied by the National coach for adult training, Sensei Andy Herbert! This was fantastic; we also had Gordon Warner turn up from the Honbu dojo. After speaking to Soke Kevin Pell, he announced that he arranged for as many people to turn up in support for the opening of the Bishops adult Ju Jitsu Club as possible.

After a quick introduction to all the senior grades, I got the class started with everyone doing a gentle warm up, after which I gathered everyone into the centre of the mat to demonstrate with Sensei Andy Herbert some self-defence techniques; everyone pick this up really easy so I sent everyone away to have a little practice with a partner.

We repeated this process with a few more techniques and Soke Kevin Pell adding his experience and expertise. By the end of the lesson there was plenty of happy smiley faces with everyone thanking me and the senior grades for a great opening night.

Thank you all very much for your support, this goes a long way with moving the club forward in the right direction!

The following week, I was very pleased to see those adults turn up again, during this lesson we practiced a few more self-defence techniques and an introduction to a ground restrain called scarfhold. With learning the pin, we had a little practice at how we escape from it. They soon learnt the basics of the technique and how effective it was. It wasn’t long before the time was up, so we went over details that they would need if they wished to join the following week.

Gavin Margrie was excited to get back into the swing of things and instantly brought in his money to sign back up again – well done Gavin! Devlinn Turner asked to order his uniform, as he was 100% committed to joining up.

The following week, Matthew was unable to make due to work commitments, both Paul and Devlinn signed up for membership – Devlinn was super excited that he had his uniform as wanted to feel a part of the group. Now that we had three new adult students within the club we started to go over the basics and etiquette that needed to be followed. We went over line-up and little details with what we do! It’s early days yet but it won’t take long to learn the ins and outs of what is needed.

The remainder of the lesson we went over basic breakfalls, which is an integral parts of what we do. After them practising many directions we changed it up by having a go at a basic hip throw. I explained the necessary actions that were needed and how you can land as safe as possible. After the explanation, they were eager to have a practice.

They were all doing great so I changed it up again and practiced forward rolls. By the end of the lesson they were all starting to understand good basic breakfalls. Well done again men, Great lesson!

The next lesson Matthew Broomfield returned to the club and signed up with membership, fantastic Matthew! This lesson, we tried putting as much of what we have learnt this month together. We started with line-up, warm up, into breakfalls and fitness tests, most not doing any kind of fitness for a long time so we started with only doing 10 of each exercise.

Press ups, sit-ups, leg raises and burpees; fantastic, they all achieved so after a quick drink of water we had another practice at our hip throws. Great to see how easily there were progressing – I think watching their sons and daughters train as helped somewhat. We then finished off by learning some of their white belt syllabus.

What a fantastic way to start the opening of a new adult class with Ishin Ryu. I would like to welcome all the new adults and hope that training with our style of Ju Jitsu will give you confidence, strength, fitness and of course great camaraderie!

We have summer holidays fast approaching and we have a number of closures due to the caretaker of the Bishop School being away. This does not mean the end of your training as you can always train at the Honbu Ju Jitsu club by paying a £10 visitor free. For further details please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please make sure you all visit the website and leave your comments, guestbook entries and of course have a look at the new calendar which has just gone live.

We have the Shochu Geiko (Ishin Ryu Ju Jitsu’s Open Martial Arts Seminar) on the 3rd and 4th of October 2015, please make sure you have this in your diary as this is an event which requires everyone’s attention. Most of the adults within the Bishops Ju Jitsu club will not be aware of this event, when I see you next I will explain all the details.

So proud that you have started an adult Dojo Sensei Del, I was starting to think that I was the only adult instructor within our organisation.
I hope the new Thetford/Bishops adult ju jitsu club goes from strength to strength and look forward to seeing the new adults at the Christmas National gradings…
    Congratulations Sensei Del
