Ishin Ryu Ju Jitsu has opened its latest dojo in Stornoway, Isle of Lewis. Based out of The Fitness Studios, May was our first full month, and what a month it has been.
The majority of students are Muay Thai practitioners, which is also based out of the studio, and are looking to cross-train. The level of camaraderie and mutual respect between the two schools has been nothing short of amazing. A special “thank you” is due to the Head Muay Thai Instructor, Norrie Mackenzie, for allowing Ishin Ryu to use his gym, and for joining us on the mat.
Whereas the ring sport of Muay Thai focuses on strikes, Ishin Ryu Ju Jitsu is more of a grappling based art. We do use some strikes, but in combination to take the opponent to the ground and gain a submission. In order to develop this, we have begun with basic breakfalls – the art of falling over without getting hurt – as well as introducing basic conditioning exercises.
The second half of the month saw the students learns the Basic Hip Throw, and many were surprised at how easy they found it to throw much larger and heavier opponents.
May ended with a run through of Ground Work. Scarfholds were followed by an array of chokes, arm locks and neck cranks, and there were a lot of sore but smiling bodies at the end of the session.
June will see us move into chokes and holds as well as beginning weapon training with a kubaton, as well as looking forward to a school trip out to the UFC Glasgow in July!
