March at the Stornoway Ju Jitsu Club has been exceptionally busy, with two new starts joining us. Lewis and Robert both come from dedicated striking arts, and have had a lot of fun on our mat with bucket loads of sweat and energy. We look forward to welcoming you to our family.
We were also honoured by a couple of MMA guests from Aberdeen in the middle of the month. Jamie and Richard were keen students, and were eager to get into our particular brand of Ju Jitsu. Jamie in particular had great ground game and it was wonderful to swap ideas with him
At the beginning of the month, students from both Lionel and Stornoway Ju Jitsu Clubs came together for a charity Strike-A-Thon, to raise money for Sporsnis – the community owned sports centre in Ness. It was a fantastic evening, with students bringing friends and family along to give maximum effort. I’m proud to report that our session raised several hundred pounds for this worthy cause; a lot of fun was had by all.
Much of the month has been spent on revision as we prepare for gradings at the end of the July. A big focus has been physical fitness, and we have been drilling traditional conditioning alongside new (ish) routines, such as The Pyramid. This is where the students run to the strike pads and knock out a set of kicks, punches and then knees before running back to the line, and then back for more of each strike. Two months they began at tens, and have slowly been building up. They are now at fifteens and I anticipate that they will soon be reaching twenties, in this cardio-endurance challenge. Well done everybody.
It has been great to see everyone putting in maximum effort into their training, particular in sparring. Within the context of respect for the dojo and our training partners, this is as close as we get to the real thing, and there have been some great demonstrations of fortitude and spirit.
Special mention must be made of Kirsty who is fast becoming an absolute blitz-machine. Not only is she shooting for single and double leg takedowns, but she is winning them before transitioning into some excellent ground submission. I only wish I knew the factory that made her so I could up more of her model type! Bring on the T-800!
Not to be out done, John and April have been raising their levels too. John’s knee bar is becoming a thing of wonder and his hip throw is developing nicely. April has been progressing really well, and in particular her major outer reap is becoming a thing of beauty.
Last but by no means least, both Steve and Jason have been demonstrating some excellent techniques. Of note, Steve’s combination strikes and sprawl and crisping up nicely, and Jason’s leg sweep are really developing well.
Finally, at the end of June, BJJ champion Joao Santos will be running a dedicated camp from June 27th to July 1st. This will be open to all current students, and sessions will be run in both the morning and evening. If you wish to explore the wider martial art universe, then please register with me as there are only a few places left.
I look forward to seeing you all next month.
