August has been a great month for the Stornoway Ju Jitsu Club, with most students now back off holiday. The month began quietly, with a look at some of the more technical techniques including the handshake defences and defences against strangles.
Into this, we have also been mixing our Body Drops and Major Outer Reaps as well as refining our Basic Hip Throws. Lesley has been really getting into these – having the lowest centre of gravity she has no problem through much bigger opponents!
As ever, we have been learning what to do with someone once we have taken them to the ground, and so we have introduced some of the kubaton take-down techniques. The kubaton has been pioneered by the Japanese Riot Police since the 1960’s, and we have had great fun (and sore wrists) going through defence and take down techniques.
To finish the month off, we returned to the ground looking at adapting the rear naked choke in a variety of scenarios before moving in the shoulder lock. Morgan – having the slimmest arms – did really well with this, and it was great fun to see him wrapping the bigger students up.
Please remember that we are celebrating 1yr of Ishin Ryu on the island (I know – where does the time go?!) on the 17th October by holding a special screening of the ORIGINAL Karate Kid at the Decca. It is £10 per head, which covers your food and it is BYOB. This is open to friends and extended family, so invite them along – we don’t bite… well not too hard anyway.
Until next month,
