I would like to congratulate Akshil Sheth in the Infant class, who has become this term’s Student Of The Month. He has worked so hard over the past term and has shown true Ishin Ryu spirit by always helping others. A very big well done Harrison – keep up the hard work.

A big well done to all the students at St Columba’s class for having passed their first grading of the year. This has been an amazing term for the students, who have working so hard on their techniques in preparation for gaining their next belt.

The class performed well after a shaky start, which was due to nerves, but once they started off they all relaxed and remembered what they were doing. We lined up and started off the grading with are breakfalls, Sempai Tom calling them out in Japanese and the children saying it back in English, left side, right side breakfall, front and back breakfall and finishing off with front rolling breakfall. They then got themselves in to pairs and began their fitness tests. Everyone started off with ten press ups, sit ups, leg raises and burpees. The fitness level that all the children are at is amazing.

With the fitness out of the way, we moved on to the grading, starting off with our basic throws four by four, Major Outer Reap, Body Drop and to finish with an Inside Hock. Once that was completed, we moved into some stand up grappling to really put the throwing techniques to the test; mixing with that some fitness we hit the class with an extra two fitness test in their grading. I could not believe it but they pulled this off no problem all I can say is very well done.

We sat the lower grades down and got all the high belts out to do some extra work, starting off with twenty burpees and ten press ups and then adding in some more stand-up grappling. With everyone all hot and sweaty, we finished off the grading with some questions about Ishin Ryu and the history of the club. The high grades having done a whole hour non-stop and still had enough energy to put their hands up and get all the questions right.

This was a really good grading, and this has been a very quick term and everyone has worked so hard.

Next term we are going to be getting everyone ready for the British Championships in May so I am looking forward to seeing how many gold medals we can get in the class.

Have a good Easter holiday and I look forward to seeing everyone next term.
