Welcome back everyone! Now the holiday season is over, it’s time to train! The Infant Class at St Benedict’s has gained a lot of new students this term – we have nine new faces join the class and everyone is having a great time. This month, we have all been working hard to learn lots of new techniques. We began with some basics for the beginners, learning breakfalls and fighting stances, essential skills to have before moving onto more advanced techniques. Following this the whole class learnt ground work at a much higher technical level than they had in the past. This included the Scarf Hold, Shoulder Hold and Side Four-Quarters. The students were then able to try out these new techniques in several rounds of grappling, with everyone grappling lots of different opponents.
The class has also begun learning some new techniques in preparation for their upcoming gradings, which have included different ways to grip an opponent before a throw. The students have practised getting the perfect grip before a throw so that when we are ready for the throws, they will all be excellent!
The Junior Class at St Benedict’s have also gained some new students and they are all training hard in anticipation for the gradings. The juniors have worked hard on some throws, which have included the Hip Throw, Body Drop and most recently the Half Shoulder.
These throws are all very important for when they progress up the belts, as there are many other more advanced throws that use similar techniques. Following this, the class have learnt some new locks so that in a defensive situation they can control their opponent, or within a competitive element they would win by tap-out. Finally the students have all been learning some variations of how to choke someone on the ground. These involve lots of different grips and ensure they are equipped for any grappling scenario.
I want to finish on an extremely positive note and say congratulations to our Students of the Month! From the infants, we have had Conleth O’Haire and from the juniors, Angelica Lawson. Both students have worked extremely hard this term and both earned this award. Well done!!
