On the 9th June 2014 the students of the Potters Bar dojo took part in the Potters Bar Carnival. It was a lovely day for it with the sun shining and everyone in high spirits for an action packed day.
We started the day off with a parade around Potters Bar to show everyone where the Carnival was being held. The kids and adults turned up in their Ishin Ryu Gi’s and big smiles ready for the walk up to the carnival. Once the parade started the party was in full swing with loads of music and people dancing the brass band leading the parade. All the children were having so much fun waving to everyone on the side of the road getting in to the carnival mood.
Once the parade got up to the top of Elm court we headed in to the main arena where the carnival was opened to a big cheer. All the Ishin Ryu students and myself headed to our stand where we had mats so people could come on for taster lessons and see what Ishin Ryu is all about. With loads of people asking about what we did we had a full mat every time and everyone was so pleased to see us. At 3pm we had a demonstration with all the students getting involved with the infants showing some amazing breakfalls, and some self-defence from grabs and also some throws. The juniors showed everyone some stand up grappling some amazing throwing at which everyone was speechless. Last up was the adults showing some basic moves from the adult syllabus and Amber Gill showing some women’s self-defence against Sempai Tom Garvin, with all the women cheering as Amber slammed Tom in to the floor with every strike connecting.
To finish off the demonstration I asked a member of the audience to come up to assist me with some Ki punching – in the stomach and kicking and the groin. Everyone looked in shock as the lady from the audience kicked me in the groin with no cup . I just stand there she kicked me 3 times and each time you could hear the contact .
I would like to thank everyone that had given up their time to be at the Potters Bar Carnival and be a part of the amazing demonstration. I was so proud of all the kids they have been working so hard and it’s amazing to see them putting it in to practice in front of so many people.
