The Isle of Lewis saw it’s largest ever cross training event last week, as enthusiastic islanders travelled far and wide to participate in the First Annual Ju Jitsu Summer Camp.

Organised and hosted by local instructor Martin Adil-Smith, the guest coach was the renowned Brazilian Jiu Jitsu World Champion Joao Santos who had travelled from Lisbon, Portugal, to teach all of those who had the heart to step on to the mat.

Regular Ju Jitsu students were joined by a multitude of their martial art cousins from both the Judo and Muay Thai clubs in Stornoway. Quick warm ups were followed detailed technical sessions that featured takedowns, transitions and submissions, demonstrating why the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has come dominate sporting events such as Pride, Strikeforce, and the UFC.

This particular branch of Jiu Jitsu specialises in using leverage and transistions to overcome larger and stronger opponents, and then destroy their position in order to gain advantage, before seeking a submission by way either of joint lock or a choke.

The Ness senior grades became so adept that they were given homework where they had to write a description of their favourite technique, and excelled themselves with detailed analysis and understanding.

So impressive were the strategy and techniques being demonstrated, that even Olympic Judoka joined the training and sparring sessions.

After more than twenty hours of intense training, it was time to close the week. The U16’s were treated to a special end of camp party at the Comunn Eachdraidh (Sgoil Chrois, Ness), and great thanks is owed to Anne and the whole team who put on such a fine spread. Additional thanks are also due to Jennifer Adil-Smith who made an outstanding martial-art cake, complete with ginger ninjas!

The evening saw the adult students descend on the Ness Social for a hardcore session of bingo, where we were all roundly beaten by the local veterans with great humour.

Many thanks to everyone who attended, and to those who supported us by organising transport for the students. We look forward to seeing you all again very soon.
