Visiting Sensei Joao Santos at Gracie Lisboa!

November has been a fantastic month at the Lionel Ju Jitsu club, with lots going on and off the mat. I enjoyed a weekend with Sensei Joao in Lisbon, Portugal. Sensei Joao was kind enough to visit us over the summer and run a week long summer camp course, and this was the return leg.

Sensei Joao is a five-time European Champion and two times Pan-American Champion, and the level of Ju Jitsu in his academy is exceptional. A massive thank you to Joao and Ana for putting me up, and to everyone who was kind enough to train with me.

Back on the Lionel mat, massive congratulations are due to Megan Sopata-Bell who is this November’s Student of The Month. Megan has had an outstanding month, developing both her takedowns and submissions. Well done Megan – keep up the good work.

Meg executes the takedown and gets ready to pull closed guard.

As a class, we have been working on taking the back and executing a rear takedown. In particular, William Donner has been having a lot of success during sparring with this technique.

On the ground, we have been training a variety of arm and shoulder locks. Ewan Amos and Lewis O’Connor have been doing very well with their nearside arm bars, and in December will move them on to the far side version.

Ewan hunts for the arm bar.

Stan gets the Figure Four shoulder lock

Stan Sopata-Bell and Eilidh Ferguson have been making great progress with the figure-four shoulder lock from side control, building on the previous work of getting the same submission from the mount position. Next month will see them replicate this from the closed guard.

Jasmine tries for the arm entanglement.

Jenny gets the lock.

Jasmine, Jenny Macleod and Zak Manby have all made great progress with their arm-entanglements. December will them get grips with shoulder holds from various positions, and how to pass the guard.

Eilildh dominates in sparring.

Finally, we have a new start this month with Melissa Macdonald who has been doing very well and has no fear getting stuck in during sparring.

Please note that the last lesson of the year will be Wednesday 21st December, and training will resume on Wednesday 4th January 2017.

Until next month,
Domo Aragato
