May has been an outstanding month for Ishin Ryu’s most northerly Ju Jitsu Club, as we prepare for student’s next grading at the end of July and our summer camp run by BJJ champion Joao Santos. In order to get ready we have been focussing on both our cardio conditioning and our submission techniques.
We have been joined by a new student – Catherine Donner, who joins her older brother William on the mat. Catherine has loved her first lessons and is doing well learning the basics of combination strikes. Over the next few weeks we will get her into knees, elbows and throws.
During the month of May, the whole Lionel class have really turned up the heat, and their talents are really shining through as they throw themselves into the techniques. Kathy has been working really hard on her takedowns, and Eilidh’s ground-game is coming on leaps and bounds as she develops her understanding of the root-and-branch nature of submission techniques.
Our youngest student, Jasmine, has been really developing her body co-ordination and is getting grips with the nature of taking her opponent’s balance as she prepares to throw them. Equally, Charley has been a standout on her locking skills, using a great combination of wrist-and-elbow locks to subdue heavier and stronger opponents.
We also cannot forget Lewis who continues to be a force to be reckoned with, particularly in the area of protecting himself from knife attacks. The same is true for William, who is really getting to grips with learning to spread his weight over his opponent, and create a strong base on the ground from which he can dominate.
In the senior class, we have been developing combination strikes into a “swarming-technique” in order to overload our opponents, as well as focussing on classical weaponry. A special mention must be made of Eilidh Ferguson who has really developed her understanding of the Bo-Staff, and is now forging ahead onto her next form. An excellent effort Eilidh – keep it up!
Finally, all of the students have been putting maximum effort in our regular session of The Pyramid – this is where the students run to the strike pads and knock out a set of kicks, punches and then knees before running back to the line, and then back for more of each strike. Two months they began at tens, and have slowly been building up. They are now at nineteen’s, and June brings the peak of the challenge – twenties, and from here on we will be concentrating on accuracy, power and speed. Well done everybody!
Next month we’ll continue on our ground work as we prepare for Joao Santos who will be running the BJJ camp from 27th June through to 2nd July.
Finally, please note that Guy Ramsay will be returning to the island and will running a Griphouse seminar from 11th-13th July in Stornoway. Last year’s sessions were absolutely amazing, and we were honoured to be joined by World Muay Thai Champion, Hilary Mack. This year promises to be no less outstanding, so please confirm your place as soon as possible.
Until next month,
