Lionel & Stornoway Dojos complete the Ness 5k

December has been a great month at the Lionel Ju Jitsu Club, as we finally undertook the Ness 5k run on the 5th, and raised over £300 for Cancer Research UK. It was a wet and rainy day, with the wind often against us. However all the students showed fantastic grit and determination, completing the run as a team, and looking after each other as we went round the hilly course.

On the mat, we have been joined by new-start William Donner who has instantly taken to our style. We have spent a few lessons on stand-up techniques, particularly using elbows and knees in short-range attacks as preludes to takedowns. In particular, Lewis O’Connor is developing a fearsome hooking elbow, and reminds us all why we need to keep our guard up!

Moving on from the close range attacks, we used the last few lessons of the year to return to the ground and put together everything that we have been learning, from throws to transitions as we hunt for submissions. Of note, both Kathy Matheson and Charley Gilroy are developing exceptional sparring abilities. Kathy is highly competitive, and has no hesitation in wrapping her opponent up as she seeks a choke. Equally, Charley is dominating her partners as she pushes forward to close the distance and secure a lock. Both of these young ladies are demonstrating an outstanding understanding of the art, and are dominating their male counterparts on the mat.

The senior grades are equally coming on leaps and bounds. This month has seen them putting multiple techniques together to secure victory, and in particular Morgan Macsween has nearly perfected his s-parry into reclining guillotine, much to the shock of his instructor who was on the receiving end of it. Additionally, Eilidh Ferguson’s sword continues to impress everyone, and she has also recently demonstrated a talent for Japanese calligraphy which we hope to nurture further.

The end of the month saw us playing some festive ju-jitsu games as we burned off a few extra calories to make way for the seasonal mince pies. It only leaves me to wish you all a peaceful holiday, and I look forward to seeing you back on the mat in 2016.

Until next month,
