Having fun after a hard grading!

Congratulations to Aengus Sullivan receiving student of the month for June 2016. Aengus works extremely hard each lesson, works well with others and enjoys demonstrating his techniques. Well-done Aengus, fantastic effort.

Congratulations to the student of the month, June/July 2016

During the month of June, we practiced a variety of techniques in preparation for the gradings which are taking place in the first week of July. The class has been learning a variety of throws, dropping reverse body drop, shoulder throw and a normal body drop. All of these throws can have different starts and finishes depending on the attack.

We went over a rear naked choke and again reminding the students through questions and answering the safety when applying these chokes. They would practice using both arms so they were confident with each side. This is one technique that does not require a great deal of strength and if performed correctly would get you into a whole lot of trouble. This is only used for the junior students and is not permitted in the infant class as some of these techniques are a little too advanced for their young minds…

We have also been learning a few ground hold techniques, scarf hold, shoulder hold and a figure of four –arm-lock. Some of the young students have been getting a little confused with their lefts and rights but this sometimes carries on as they get older. A few little reference points on their uniform, helps them on their way.

Practice for the school demonstration

On Friday 01st July 2016, Hopton students put everything into practice by demonstrating all their techniques needed for their gradings exam. After they successfully demonstrated their techniques, I started making their grading harder by increasing the fitness, stand-up grappling and random breakfalls. It didn’t matter what was thrown at them, they were all determined to push to the end, exactly the kind of spirit that we wanted from our students.

The following week was games and presentations and the last lesson before we break up for summer holidays. This games lesson meant that the children could have a variety of fun using pugil sticks and giant boxing gloves to fight against each other in a controlled environment. It was a great day and finished off with parents and families coming along to watch their children receiving their new belts.

On Sunday 22nd May 2016 Ishin Ryu staged the Children’s Championships. Max Measures, William Fulcher and Cameron Bremner entered into the infant & junior competition, William and Cameron won 1st place and became British champion in their weight category. Some fantastic fighting, well-done to the pair of you! Unfortunately, Max was unsuccessful at getting in the top three places but had some amazing fights and experience. Everyone performed so well and really proud of you all!

HOPE YOU ALL HAVE A FANTASTIC SUMMER AND I WILL SEE YOU ALL WHEN YOU RETURN!
