Congratulations to Alicia Lucraft on being awarded student of the month for July 2015. Alicia shows great determination and fighting spirit; she is never frightened to practice anything and continues to perform each week. Well done Alicia.
Straight after lessons the children prepare themselves for their Ju Jitsu classes that are scheduled to start at 3:15pm. The children all line up at the side of the mats, eager to get the class started as today is the children’s national gradings.
The first thing to do was to get the senior grade of the class which was Chloe Holloway to line the class up, from here the children would be assessed on their line-up skills, saying their dojo oath in Japanese and in English, answering questions about the club again in Japanese and in English, understanding who are the instructors in the club and who was the founder and chief instructor of a Ishin Ryu Ju Jitsu.
The students made a good start to the grading and we moved swiftly on to warm-up and then fitness tests, starting with press-ups followed shortly by sit-ups leg raises and burpees. Time for a quick drink of water then they would lined up down the centre of the mat facing each other for the next part of their exam – testing on their techniques that they have been learning over previous weeks.
As the Hopton school has both infants and juniors within one class they would both be assessed over the same techniques but the junior students of the class having extra. They had all learnt escapes from being grabbed over or under the arms both from the front and rear. As the juniors are usually older and wiser they are allowed to finish the technique of with strikes but of course being careful not to follow through.
In between the techniques we added fitness to see how they would cope with been hot and sweaty, all students worked really hard as they did not want to repeat this again. Following shortly after this they would then be assessed on their standing and kneeling grappling abilities; testing their fighting spirit!
Congratulations to you all!
The following week we had no classes, as I was away on Federation business, the school was also away on a school trip, which meant most of them would not be able to attend classes anyway.
The week after that was class games and presentations week, the games are the reward for them passing their grading exam. Straight after games we get the children ready to do class presentations this is where mums, dads, grandparents and any family members wishing to come along and take photos or record this special occasion with them.
After the students finish receiving their new belt and certificates and being applauded by family members, we finished off by chucking our belts into the air to celebrate another stage in our martial arts career.
After the presentations the Hopton School will be on summer holidays, which means that there will be no Ju Jitsu classes at the school, but if you wish to keep training, you could always attend my other classes in Thetford at the Bishops school, for further details on times, please visit the Ishin Ryu Ju Jitsu website: www.ishinryu.com
