On Saturday 4th July 2015, students from the Hopton School Ju Jitsu club participated in their annual school fete, and the weather was forecast to be so much better than the previous year. Last year was very overcast with the downpour of rain and meant that we could not place the mats down all day.
I arrived early this time with my trailer full of mats, with the sun beaming, I knew we were set to have a fabulous day! After arriving there were teachers, parents, relatives and a few companies hired in setting up for the day. There was a range of activities on display for the children to enjoy; we had bouncy castles, plate smashing, archery, face painting, pony riding, choir, candy floss, ice cream and much more…
I emptied the mats from the trailer and started setting up, gazebo to one end accompanied with table, chairs, balloons and a few advertising displays. With everyone setup and ready to go I looked around the sites and started to enjoy everything on display – really enjoyed the section where children, teachers, parents and family members get to enjoy soaking others with a wet sponge.
I also enjoyed the section where you can smash crockery two pieces using a golf ball – of course I had a little dabble with this and tried not to hit anyone after bouncing the golf ball off the framework…“Look out!”
Straight after the choir, students started getting ready for their demonstration. The children quickly lined up at the side of the mats ready to go. After bowing onto the mat we very quickly realised that the sun had been beaming on the mats all day and everyone was finding it difficult to standstill – time for everyone to get their socks on I think! Although this helped a little bit everyone still had the sensation that their feet were burning – I quickly explained to the children that in between doing our breakfalls, stand at the edge of the mat to relieve the sensation on their feet.
After the warm-up we went straight into breakfalls demonstrating to the crowds the variety of techniques that the children use within class; we continued with this format but adding a little spice to the breakfalls. The children will now demonstrate to the crowds forward rolling over objects each time the height and difficulty increasing. The children performed excellent at this, so time for the next stage of the demonstration which was to show the crowd the techniques that they’ve just been practising leading up to their gradings. With both sides going, we also added throws, standing and kneeling grappling…
Under the conditions the children performed excellent – I know how difficult it was standing on the mats as I burnt my feet myself. Immediately after the demonstration there was massive applauds from the spectators – well done to you all!
After the demonstration I gathered all the children to buy them an ice cream, a worthy reward after such a hot day.
I would like to thank all the students from the Hopton Ju Jitsu club that took time from their day to help out with the demonstration, I would also like to thank Rebecca Bradbury and Billie-Jo Shannon, Katie-Lee Shannon and of course Sharon Cole that came along to help.
Unfortunately I will not see Greta Fagher return to the school as she is now reached the age to move on in her schooling. Hopefully Greta will join us at the Bishops Ju Jitsu club! If not, then I would like to wish Greta the very best for the future, it has been a pleasure to teach you – thank you!
I hope that you all have a lovely summer; I look forward to seeing you upon your return!
There will be no Ju Jitsu classes at the school, but if you wish to keep training, you could always attend my other classes in Thetford at the Bishops school, for further details on times, please visit the Ishin Ryu Ju Jitsu website: www.ishinryu.com
