I would like to say a big well done to Ellie Lawton- Nicholls in the infant class, Thesanya W-Perera and Indiana Brown in the junior class for becoming this month’s student of the month. All three students have worked so hard and have turned up to every lesson in the summer holidays.
With the summer holidays in full swing, we have been learning something different; grappling from standing, kneeling and even laying down, some throws and basic self-defence. The kids have been having fun with this and playing loads of games as well. With the classes being a bit quieter than normal this has been a great way for the students as it’s like having a one on one lesson. We have been honing all the basics keeping sharp on our breakfalls one week moving on to some ground work the second week and throwing during the next week and finally with grappling from kneeling and also from stand up.
It has been amazing watching all the kids’ progress each week and having a smaller class all the kids have been working super hard on this and even throwing Sensei Del and Sensei Tom. All the kids have had so much fun and all of them loved having a grapple and a throw around with one of the instructor’s.
With both infant classes and junior classes going over basic moves and having loads of fun with grappling and throwing, we also did the same with the teenagers keeping them on their toes going back to white belt seeing how much they could remember and blow off some cobwebs. I have to say everyone had a brilliant time. We did some fine tuning but everyone was outstanding. Over the next 2 weeks, we were doing some techniques from each belt giving everyone a look at each belt and giving the lower belts something to look forward to. Some of the teenagers were getting into some of the faster and harder throws from blue belt and purple belt.
I could see some of them trying to use it in stand up grappling. One student that has been working really hard in the teenager class and has been working on fitness and coordination is Jessica Marshall. Even though she is blind she still does everything in the lesson from picking up weapons from a front roll to leapfrogging over other students in the class. Jessica has no fear and doesn’t care what she does and pushes herself to her limits every lesson. I look forward to seeing Jessica move to the next stage which will be the adult lesson. I know she is very keen to move up so watch out adults there is a new girl in town.
With the summer holidays coming to an end I hope everyone had a lovely holiday and I am looking forward to seeing everyone back in the dojo in one peace and ready for another action packed month in September. I would also like to wish everyone good luck in their New Year groups or moving to a new school.
