Bushey Monday Ju Jitsu Club
Monthly Report, March 2014

I would like to start off by congratulating Daisy Denholm from the Infant Class, Benjamin Goodkind from the 1st Junior Class and Saul Simons of the 2nd Junior Class for receiving Student of the Month for March.  Well done guys – you worked hard to receive this!

At the start of March we had gradings and presentations but I will tell you all about that in a separate report… Throughout the remaining lessons this month, we worked on advancing the techniques we had just learned for the gradings. After initiating a throw, the children would follow it up with a ground hold technique.

We also worked on balancing drills to try and make their legs a little bit stronger. The children would stand on one foot leaning completely over and start hopping. Using their hands, they would push each other away whilst still trying to maintain balance. Their legs became very achy very quickly so we changed legs and partners many times! These drills help with maintaining balance when trying to throw your partner. They all thoroughly enjoyed doing these so I added another one… This time they would crouch down, hopping on two feet and do the same drill and try to push against each other. They found it quite amusing, especially when they would fall backwards – great back breakfall practice!

During March, students also tried out ‘blindfolded grappling’ – a bit of an alienating experience for some, but there were plenty of smiles when engaging each other.  As the students found out, not being able to use your eyes and solely relying on your hands and sense of touch to feel which way your partner may move was quite tricky!

The teenagers and adults continued to work on syllabus techniques with there only being a few months to their gradings, which will be here before we know it! Welcome Trey Tallon from the Junior Class, who is now giving the Teenager Class a trial.  He tells me he’s really enjoying it and is finding it different from his previous group.

The senior adult grades who are attempting their Shodan-Ho grading in May are pushing on hard as time is getting closer and closer…  Keep going guys!! Remember, pain is temporary, pride is forever!!!
