Congratulations to Dylan Alter from the infant class and Ronnie Canning-Elms from the junior class receiving student of the month for September 2015. Both students has shown massive improvements with their techniques and continue to do well. Thank you to Roni, who turns up a little earlier to help me out during the infant class! On Thursday 3rd September 2015 the infant class started the month off by learning broken side for quarters. This is a ground hold technique which secures the arm underneath the body of the students laying on top. Sempai Jack O’Brien and myself moved around the matted space and helped the children with correct form. With multiple changes to partners and the different activities to incorporate this technique we got the students adapting very quickly.

The junior class concentrated their efforts on a figure of four armlock whilst been pinned on there back and their opponent caught between their legs. We tried this from both sides and really got the students working hard.

Nice figure four armlock!

The following week both classes concentrated their efforts on hip throw, breaking the technique down into stages to allow the student to understand – firstly getting the students in the correct position, understanding what they need to do with their hips and legs to perform a good throw. This is quite a hard throw to master especially at a young age but once learnt most throws are carried out in this way.

Whether your four years of age or fourty-four years of age, there can be a lot hesitation when being thrown, so big emphasis is made on the students breakfalling ability to build confidence with landing.

For a couple of weeks after we performed defences from leg scissors (caught between someone’s legs whilst they are squeezing you) we had great fun doing this technique as it was quite comical to watch the student’s faces when elbows are placed into nerve points!

We also had fun with performing defences from a kick; the student would secure the attackers leg, take them down and finish off with the leg lock. The infants would not perform this leg lock; for some this was just a little bit too complicated…

In November we will have the children’s gradings so big emphasis will be made over the next month to get their grading techniques to standard, we will also work on their fitness and being able to combine them both!

On the third and fourth of October 2015 the adults students will be travelling to Thetford, Norfolk to attend the 14th International Martial Arts Seminar (Shochu Geiko) where students can learn a variety of different martial arts over two days ranging from: Ju-Jitsu, Batto Jutsu, Escrima, Sport Nunchaku, Judo, Iaido, MMA, Kempo, Karate, Brazilian Ju Jitsu, kick Boxing and Military CQB.

This is going to be a fantastic weekend and many students are really looking forward to this annual event!
