August is always a difficult time as most are away for their summer holidays. For those that stay behind training carries on. Student of the month stayed the same for August so congratulations to Luca Lazar in the infant class and Nicole Green, junior class.
Myself and the family took some R&R over August and spend the time wisely around England’s theme parks having lots of fun. While I was absent Jack O’Brien Sempai covered the classes with his expert tuition. Thank you for covering the classes Sempai Jack, its greatly appreciated!
During the month of August, I would like to say congratulations to Timi Afolabi who has been awarded a plaque for six year’s commitment to training. Timi loves to train hard and likes to be as technical as possible. Well done Timi, I hope you are able to continue your training for many more years to come.
Throughout the month infant and junior students have a performed a variety of different techniques. The infant class practiced a throwing technique called “reclining leg,” to make the name more memorable I call the technique “Love the leg,” which makes the children laugh and thus remember it more. If you performed this technique, you can easily see why I call it this.
The junior class went over a few ground hold techniques, Scarf hold, guillotine choke, straight armbar and arm entanglement. These four techniques can all be performed from the scarf hold position. Most of these techniques were performed with team relay races to help with repetition and as always to have fun whilst learning…!
The class has also enjoyed performing different relay races using medicine balls, these can come in a variety of sizes and weights but help the children with exercises.
Near the end of the month, we started work on some defensive techniques starting from a handshake, twisting your partner out and taking them down. The junior class performed a slightly different variation of this technique as they are a little older and more controlled.
It’s been a great month and the children learning some valuable techniques that will help them in a self-defense situation. Next month I look forward to seeing everyone back from their holidays and getting into training.
