Congratulations to Harry O’Neill (Infant class) and Joshua Myers (Junior class) on receiving Student of the Month for April 2015. Harry and Joshua are both making great progress with their ju jitsu skills.
At the beginning of the month the Infant class started work on a throw called body drop, also known as “Tai-otoshi,” I first encouraged the children learning to hold for the grip and then moved to the positioning of the body; rather than performing lots of steps I made them quickly jump around into position pull their partner over the leg and lower to the floor ensuring they got their breakfall out. The new starters were shown a little variation of the throw to help them where their body should be. With a little practice they were performing as the rest of the class.
The Junior class learnt some transitions from the mount, moving from one side to the other before working on body drop. They picked this throw up quite quickly so we added a few finishers such as arm bar and pins. This was performed throughout the month and students got quite quick at this throw. During lessons we also worked on fitness, which really got their blood pumping, and they also like to compete against each other.
Near the end of the month the Infant class were taught some basic self-defence techniques, one from a grab to the chest and one from a from behind. The children really enjoyed these techniques and picked them up real easy. I also explained to the class were we should practice these techniques and where not to.
The Junior class at the end of the month had a belt-tying lesson; something I thought was needed, as there were a lot of students that could not do this. Those that could tie their belts would go around the class and help out to gain extra stamps in their star cards to get those fantastic medals. Ilan Schogger was a great help, well done Ilan!
Next month we have Ishin Ryu’s British Championships being held in Thetford, Norfolk that will be a packed event, with challengers coming from all over the country to compete to be the champion in their weight category. Good luck to all the students entering from the Borehamwood Thursday Ju Jitsu club!
Please remember, if you wish to enter, all entries must be handed in by Saturday 9th May 2015.
