Throughout the month of May Infant students at The Bishops School practiced their breakfalls but with different combinations. They practiced forward rolls then standing straight up and finishing with left, right, front or back breakfall. This got them to think about directions, which sometimes gets the smaller ones quite confused.

The previous months we’ve been working on takedowns and pins so we continued with that same format but this time learning how to block a punch then throw your partner down and pin them.
Before we could go straight into it, we had to break it down into sections so the young students don’t just start hitting each other around the head. First getting the right stance. I use the club badge on their left arm to give them a reference point so if the young students forget which is their left they can have a quick look to remember. Once we practiced a few times I played games but incorporating this technique into the game so they still get to enjoy themselves but get lots of repetition of the technique.

Junior students have been doing lots of stand-up randori. Having four pairs out at a time they would stand opposite each other and on the command “Rae,” bow to each other as a sign of respect. I would then give them the command “Hajime,” from which they will begin and try to throw their partner down to the ground, pin them immediately after hitting the ground.
We also practiced two variations of a rear strangle. Before we got all students to practice these techniques I made a big safety talk to all the students so they all understood the importance of working safely with each other. After demonstrating and getting the students to practice with each other I travelled around the mat and helped in little difficulties they had whilst practicing.

On Sunday the 18th of May Ishin Ryu Ju Jitsu staged the British Championships in which students from all clubs and affiliated clubs were able to put themselves to test and try win the British Champion at their weight group.
