Having taught children for the last fifteen years moments like this are very special and give me so much joy. Alex Whiffin started in 2003 in the junior class at the thetford dojo, working his way through the belts to achieve the top rank of Brown/Black. Due to healthy problems he had to take time out from training. Having got his condition under control he has returned to training alongside his brother Edward and Terry. Alex has always been a great student since 2003, always supporting his dojo and fellow students.
Where do I start with Terry, I can remember him doing his first ever demonstration at the Thetford Carnival back in 2004, even back then he was a strong and determined student, working hard throughout his lessons. He was always at the class and only missed lessons when he went on holiday with his family.
He worked his way through the infant class, moving into the junior class passing all his belts.
By now most students would have given up, stayed at home and play on the Xbox or 360 instead. Not Terry he moved straight into the teenager class until he had to move into the adult class where he is today.
As terry’s instructor I am so proud of him in so many ways for everything he has achieved.
Terry is so dedicated to his training that he asked me if he could help with my Saturday morning classes. I was more than happy to have terry teach alongside me. It is a great feeling to have known a student since they were four years of age, and see them grow into a strong, respectful, decent young man.
It was a very special moment for their mum and dad to see their son’s being rewarded in recognition of twelve years and six years of commitment to training. As I said in front of the class, it is amazing to witness what great students can achieve. Today’s children so easily give up because it take to much work or it’s to tiring. Many would rather sit at home on their Xbox then keep fit, make new friends, learn new skills and be able to protect themselves.
I can never put into words and proud I am of Terry and Alex, it is the best feeling any instructor can ever feel. Thank you so much for making it such a pleasure to teach you both over the last 12 years.
